Navigating the Mental Health Assessment Pathway: A Resource for Parents and Professionals – By Dr Dina Bedair

Navigating the Mental Health Assessment Pathway: A Resource for Parents and Professionals

As a clinical psychologist and the clinical director at Therapy by Insights in Production City, I often encounter both parents and professionals concerned about young people’s mental health. Whether you’re a parent seeking clarity for your child or a school counsellor looking to support your students, understanding our Mental Health Assessment Pathway can help guide you through this process.

What is a Mental Health Assessment?

A mental health assessment is a structured approach designed to identify emotional and behavioural difficulties that may be impacting on a child or young person’s daily life. It is not just about filling out forms and getting a “clinical score”; it’s about understanding the unique experiences of each child/young person. Many families reach out to us when they notice signs of anxiety, mood changes, or behavioural shifts in their children, e.g., school avoidance.

For professionals, recognising when to recommend an assessment can be crucial in providing timely support. Often a school counsellor or member of the school team can gain unique insight into a young person’s difficulties as they see them in an environment where academic and social demands are being placed on them.

Mental Health vs. Neurodevelopmental Assessments

At Insights, we are known for our neurodevelopmental assessments, but a mental health assessment is different, and really addresses a gap in our service provision up until now. When considering the best type of assessment for a child, it’s important to distinguish between mental health and neurodevelopmental assessments:

  • Neurodevelopmental Assessments focus on lifelong differences in how a child’s brain functions, addressing presentations such as Autism, ADHD and learning differences e.g., dyslexia. They help illuminate how children learn and process information differently from their peers.
  • Mental Health Assessments, on the other hand, focus on emotional and behavioural responses to environmental factors. This includes presentations like anxiety, depression, and trauma, which may not be lifelong, but can significantly affect a young person’s well-being and ability to function on a daily basis.

Understanding these differences helps both parents and professionals determine the most appropriate pathway for each child. If you’re not sure however, we can always support with guidance and recommendations for which pathway may be most appropriate.

What we assess for

Some of the difficulties that we assess for are somewhat “straightforward”, e.g., anxiety, phobias, depression, trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, hair pulling, situational mutism etc. However, some of the difficulties we assess for are in a way “camouflaged” and what you may see on the surface is school avoidance or an avoidance of every day demands. Our job is to gain a holistic understanding of the young person to identify what is underlying the school avoidance or avoidance of daily demands to be able to reach a diagnostic conclusion and make practical and appropriate recommendations.

Your Child’s Assessment Journey with Us

Our assessment process is designed to be supportive and straightforward, consisting of three key steps:

  1. Parent Consultation: This initial meeting is an opportunity for parents to share their concerns and for us to understand the child’s history.
  1. Child Assessment: We engage with the child in a comfortable environment, using conversations and activities to gather insights.
  1. Feedback & Report: We provide a comprehensive report and meet to discuss findings and recommendations. This collaborative effort ensures everyone is on the same page, including parents, the school team (if appropriate), and any other professionals.

The Importance of Early Identification

Early identification of mental health difficulties can lead to improved outcomes. By clarifying the right path forward, we empower families and provide professionals with the information they need to support their young people effectively.
