Autism Support Groups at Insights: A Parent's Perspective

Compiled by Victoria Russo, Parent Facilitator - July 26, 2024

Before I begin, have you heard about our Autism Support Groups?

Our Autism Support groups run several times a year at our clinic in JLT.  This 6 week programme is open to autistic individuals from ages 7-18.  For the younger age groups, participants learn about autism through a neuro-affirmative lens, developing a positive understanding of themselves and their individual thinking style.  The older age groups work on developing ideas and strategies for their own self-advocacy.  These small groups are a safe space for children to make connections and build friendships with likeminded peers.  Alongside these groups is an informal parent group facilitated by a parent of an autistic individual.

As the academic year closes, we find ourselves reflecting on the remarkable journey we’ve embarked upon together. Each group has brought its own unique contributions, creating a rich tapestry of experiences that have continually enriched our clinic. It’s a joy and privilege to witness the vibrant diversity of brain styles and to learn from the incredible individuals and their parents who participate in our sessions.

From the beginning, our mission has been to create a supportive environment where neurodivergent learners can thrive. We believe in celebrating differences, recognising that every brain brings a distinct and valuable perspective to the table. Our groups are more than just a meeting place; they are a community. We’ve seen friendships blossom, confidence grow, and new skills develop. Each story of progress, no matter how small, is a testament to the power of a neuroaffirming approach. It’s about recognising strengths, providing tailored support, and fostering an atmosphere where everyone feels valued and understood.

As a clinic, we value the support, participation and feedback of young people and their parents. This is instrumental in shaping the neuroaffirming space we are so proud to offer. I interviewed Yvonne Baker following her and her son’s participation in our most recent autism support groups at Insights. Keep reading to hear Yvonne’s perspective of the group!

Why did you decide to participate in the Autism Support Groups?

I wanted to find a group where my son could socialise and make connections, where he could be himself and would be accepted.  I wanted him to better understand and accept his autism and the challenges that other people also face.  This was his first experience of such a group and was such a positive one that he would like to do it again!

What were your expectations of the Autism Support Group?

A safe space to chat and be himself and have more of a purpose through talking and fun activities.  To increase his awareness of how others cope.  The social story sent out in advance of the first session and every week was very helpful so that he knew what to expect.  I liked how the rules of the group were explained in advance.

Did the Autism Group exceed your expectations?

Yes, the group exceeded my expectations.  My son was open to trying new fun activities he had not experienced before, because he felt very comfortable in the group.  Meeting weekly gave him a purpose and he looked forward to the sessions.  He built connections with other children that have been able to grow outside of the group.

Did you enjoy the Parent Groups?

I really enjoyed these groups.  The sessions were very relaxed and provided an opportunity to connect with a variety of different parents.  Throughout the 6 weeks, there was lots of laughter, some tears and support from everyone.  Parents’ honesty was refreshing, parents felt comfortable to be open about any challenges they faced and sharing experiences gave others hope.

Was there anything you would like to add to the Groups?

I would like there to be a social event for the children to meet outside the group.  Now that the group is finished it would be lovely for the children to meet up in a social setting.  I would also enjoy meeting the parents again outside of the group for a social evening.

What next for our Groups at Insights?

Looking ahead, we are filled with optimism and excitement. We are committed to expanding our reach, welcoming more individuals into our groups, and continuing to advocate for neurodivergent-friendly practices. Our vision is a world where every neurodivergent learner feels empowered and supported, not just within our clinic but in all areas of life.

Our next Autism Groups commence on September 17th and run every Tuesday at 4.30pm.  If you would like to know more about the Autism Groups, please contact [email protected]
